The problem❓
There are many people who have the desire to learn how to cook. While there are numerous digital products available to help individuals explore the world of cooking, the products currently on the market do not adequately meet the diverse needs of learners at different skill levels.
The solution 💡
Creating a cross-platform product that meets the needs of users with different habits and requirements.

Research plan

Since this is a new project, I believe that user research is the best way to help me uncover the problems and user needs.
Project brief
How to make learning to cook an easy task.
Background
There are many reasons that make people to start learning cook, such as pandemic, saving money, or move to new environment.
Research success criteria
There are many reasons that prompt people to start learning how to cook, such as the pandemic, saving money, or moving to a new environment.
What deliverables
  • Affinity mappingUser
  • PersonaUser
  • Journey Map
Hypothesis
  • The materials and tools are difficult to prepare.
  • The stuffs are expensive.
  • Not sure which recipe to learn.
  • Don't know how much needs to be spent on the cooking process.
  • The tutorials or recipes are difficult to follow because the required materials are not clearly stated.
Methods
Interview + Contexture inquiry
Participants
  • Digital Natives: own a smartphone + tablet or other device
  • Education: Finished School
  • People: 5 people
  • location: United States
  • Age: 18-40yrs
  • Other: Having interests or needs for learning cooking

Key takeaways

I interviewed 5 people. Also, I did affinity mapping to explore the opportunities.
Affinity mapping
1. "I am unsure about the amount of materials and sauces required for preparation."

When users try to make a different number of servings, they often struggle with determining how much materials and sauces they need to prepare.

2. "The existing products available in the market do not align with my cooking expertise."

Every person has varying levels of cooking skills. Experts prefer a concise version, while newbies prefer a detailed tutorial.

3. "I don't want to use my dirty hands to touch the screen while I am cooking."

People often get their hands dirty while cooking and usually don't want to wash them repeatedly to ensure they are clean enough to touch a screen.

4. "I would like to have a wider range of options to choose from when deciding which recipe to practice."

Users prefer having a wider range of recipe options for the same cuisine, allowing them to choose how they want to cook it.

compatitve analysis

In order to gain a better understanding of the feature design, I analyzed four products.
  • It's great to see a variety of recipe options. Make sure to clarify the ingredients and tools needed beforehand.
  • Shop ingredients in the app
  • The tutorial video cannot control
  • It’s good to let users choose which food
  • Guide user step by step with both videos and text
  • Need to control with hand
  • Have a meal plan for the user too add recipes on the calender.
  • It’s good to guide user step by step
  • Too many words, but hard understand without pictures and videos.

Goals

How can we help users learn to cook more easily?
1. Automatic calculation of ingredient amounts
When users try to make a different number of servings, they always struggle with how much materials and sauces they need to prepare.
2. Let users choose the level they are comfortable with
Every person has varying levels of cooking skills. Experts prefer a concise version, while newbies prefer a detailed tutorial.
3. Voice control feature
People often get their hands dirty while cooking and usually don't want to wash them repeatedly to make them clean enough to touch a screen.
4. Rich in choices
Users prefer to have a greater variety of recipes for the same cuisine, allowing them the opportunity to cook the cuisine according to their preferences.

Potential solutions

Usability testing

To determine if my design effectively assists users in achieving their goals, I conducted usability testing. I invited five individuals to navigate through my design and assess whether they could successfully complete the task without encountering any issues. I identified eight problems and made iterative improvements, ultimately achieving success.
